Australian Jazz Award WINNER for BEST VOCAL ALBUM 2012.
There is a well worn saying in the music business that goes...
"if you marry a singer, make sure they can sing, because sooner or later they'll end up singing with the band."
Not surprisingly with many of these adage's they are frequently come true. Fortunately for this bandleader, Kristin Berardi is universally acknowledged as a vocalist of rare talent and technique that continues to astonish, and endear herself to, audiences around the world. This rewarding project has been three in the making and has been a production of epic proportions, unique in the Australian jazz scene, particulary in recent times. Seven young composers were asked to interpret and arrange Kristin's original compositions for jazz orchestra with arrangements coming from far afield as Cologne, Sydney, New York, Hobart, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Picton. Naturally this project required serious financial support and was made possible in the initial stages by the generosity of Laurence and Cathy Freedman. Part of Kristin's winning Freedman Fellowship proposal in 2007 was to have a set of her originals arranged for voice and jazz orchestra which has since evolved into this CD recording.
Sincere thanks to the gentleman of the orchestra for their continued dedication to the cause. In particular Lucian McGuiness, Murray Jackson & Jeremy Borthwick who continue to help facilitate the orchestras existence with their wisdom, talent, hard work, and willingness to assist in overcoming the many challenges that arise for a small arts organisation in an increasingly difficult arts climate.
A special mention goes to the amazing NYC based composer Laura Kahle, whose wonderful arrangement of Tainish, written by Kristin as a tribute to Laura's partner, didn't make the CD due to time constraint's in the recording studio. Hopefully next time we'll get to hear the mothership play her beautiful arrangements.
Thanks to the Sydney Conervatorium of Music, whose support allows me to facilitate projects like this; John Morrison for his energy and wonderful 'bedside manner' in the recording studio; Ross, Mace, Florian, Kelly, Steve, Laura and Kristin for the compelling arrangements that adorn this project; and Chris at Linear for his ears and patience.
This album is dedicated to the "babyship orchestra", a fictional ensemble featuring the now fifteen offspring of the members of the mothership orchestra which has grown from zero in 2004 when the band was formed.
